The Role of Community Science in Climate Change Adaptation: Insights from the ARA EAP Knowledge Catalyst Workshop

Introduction

Food is the foundation of human survival, and how we produce it will decide our ability to thrive in an era of climate uncertainty. As droughts prolong, rainfall turns erratic, and soils lose fertility across the continent, the search for adaptation strategies has never felt more urgent. Yet some of the most effective solutions already exist within the knowledge systems of the communities living closest to the land. For instance, in western Kenya, farmers have long intercropped maize with legumes and left strips of natural vegetation between plots, a practice that helps retain soil moisture and keep pests off the crop.

Today the practice might be labelled “climate-smart agriculture”, but fifty years ago, it was simply how a family farmed. Mulching, crop rotation, agroforestry, seed preservation, water harvesting: all now promoted as innovations were shaped by generations of indigenous farming. This was built through years of observation and adjustment to local conditions. These practices helped conserve moisture, enrich soil, reduce pests, and increase resilience. Modern science has helped explain why this has been the case; however, it has been slow to credit “who”.

This raises an uncomfortable question: why do traditional practices so often gain acceptance only after they’re renamed in scientific language? The point is not credit for its own sake. It is recognising that local communities have always been active innovators, and that their knowledge deserves equal standing in adaptation planning, not a supporting role once it has been validated elsewhere. This is what community science means: knowledge built through lived experience, the observations of farmers, pastoralists, and fisher folk who track weather, ecosystems, and crop performance daily, refined across generations.

Community science as a foundation for adaptation

As climate change accelerates, these communities are often the first to notice what’s changing, and the first to adjust, identifying drought-resistant varieties, shifting planting calendars, diversifying livelihoods, restoring degraded land. Scientific research and indigenous knowledge work best as partners here, not competitors. Formal science can validate and scale community practices; local knowledge supplies the context-specific detail, what is practical, affordable, and culturally workable in a given place, which broader research often misses.

Despite its value, most of this knowledge is still passed down orally, which makes it fragile. As older generations pass and communities urbanise, techniques and the reasoning behind them can disappear within a generation. That absence has real costs: adaptation strategies stay invisible to researchers and policymakers. Successful local innovations rarely get replicated because there is no evidence that they work, and the broader narrative about African agriculture keeps being written by outsiders looking in.

Why Does Documentation Matter?

Documentation turns lived experience into evidence that can shape research, inform policy, and finally credit the people who did the innovating. It shows that community-developed practices produce measurable results, repositioning communities as partners in innovation rather than as recipients. It lets communities facing similar climate pressures learn directly from each other, advances policy by giving governments and donors something concrete to back, and lets communities track their own progress, recording practices, yields, and outcomes to see what is working and adjust what is not.

Resilience will not come from knowledge flowing in one direction, from institutions down to communities. It has to move both ways. Participatory research, citizen science, digital storytelling, and community-led monitoring can turn local people into producers of knowledge rather than sources of information. Naming the sources of these innovations should not be a footnote. This simple practice helps to build the trust and cultural continuity that keeps the next generation solving problems rather than waiting for outside solutions to arrive.

Looking Ahead

Climate change is forcing a reckoning with how knowledge gets made, shared, and valued. Innovation was never confined to laboratories; it has always lived on farms, in forests, and in fishing communities where people have adapted to change for generations. The future of food security will not be built by new technology alone. It will depend just as much on rediscovering, and finally crediting, what communities have known all along.
