About Climate Resilient Economies (CRE) Programme

The successful candidate will work within the CRE programme in implementing on-going research projects and support in acquisition of new projects. The CRE’s program mission is to contribute to Inclusive, pro poor and thriving climate change resilient economies for economic, social, and environmental sustainability in Africa. The program’s strategic objective is to support the development of enabling capacities, policies, organisations, and institutions for harnessing applications of climate change related sciences, technologies and innovations for energy access and security, water quality and security, biodiversity, and natural resource management in Africa. Specifically, the candidate will work within the Blue Empowerment Project.

About the Blue Empowerment Project

Blue empowerment is a low-carbon, gender transformative initiative in coastal Kenya, with the aim of contributing to tackling barriers for the empowerment of fisher women through adoption of climate-smart integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA) of seaweeds and fish for improved livelihoods and resilience. Anchored in sustainable development goal (SDG) 5 on the crucial role of gender equality in development processes as well as in the Kenya Vision 2030, the expected main beneficiaries of the result of this project are women at the coast of Kenya - mainly in Kwale county, to be scaled to Kilifi County. The project is funded by IDRC, and implemented by African Centre for Technology Studies (ACTS), in partnership with Bahari CBO Network, Kenya Industrial Research and Development Institute (KIRDI), Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI), C-Weed Corporation and Kenyatta University (KU). The Project is therefore seeking an outstanding candidate for the position of Project Manager to work in the Blue Empowerment project, within the Climate Resilient Economy (CRE) Programme.

Scope of work for the Project Manager

In close collaboration with the project team, the Project Manager (PM) will work in close coordination with the Project Principal Investigators (PIs) and the head of the CRE programme in project planning and implementation. The general functions of the PM will entail project planning, monitoring, data collection, evaluation, stakeholder mobilization and coordination, training, dissemination of Information and correspondence between relevant partners and stakeholders within the BE project and other places as delegated by the Principal Investigator. The Project Manager will work and be stationed in Kwale/Kilifi County and hosted in the project field office at the Bahari CBO Network. The PM will report to the overall project PI, and be required to submit all deliverables, in time and in the required quality.

Duties and Responsibilities

The main duties and responsibilities will include to:

  1. Provide insight and information during project planning and implementation.
  2. Coordinate field execution of the Blue Empowerment Project in consultation with the Project Work Package leads.
  3. Document project field technical and financial reports in coordination with the PIC and Project team.
  4. Mobilize relevant stakeholders for various meetings, training workshops and other project activities in close collaboration with the PIs, they will include and not limited to the community members and elders, county government officials, National government officials, CSOs, BMUs, religious leaders among others. This will also entail developing rapport with both private and public stakeholders concerned in the project.
  5. Coordination and report writing of training workshops and stakeholder meetings in collaboration with PIs. Collaborate in monthly project report according to the requirements of the donors.
  6. Administer various data collection tools and templates for data collection in collaboration with M&E officer. She/he will also be responsible for collating and reporting stakeholder feedback using the availed tools.
  7. Attend relevant project, interagency County and national level meetings, trainings and conferences as may be required.
  8. Contribute to the development and delivery of weekly and monthly work plans in close coordination with the Work Package Leads.
  9. Ensure implementation, monitoring, evaluation and learning from the project activities, and develop success stories from the field.
  10. Any other relevant and lawful responsibilities assigned by the project PI and the Project Implementation Committee (PIC).

Qualifications

  • A university degree or an equivalent in project management, community development, environmental sciences, social work, social science, aquatic sciences, or any other relevant field.
  • At least 1 years of significant and hands-on experience in community development, project management and environmental governance in the coastal counties.
  • Experience in working closely with the coastal communities
  • Must be a resident of Kwale County or be willing to relocate to Kwale county.
  • Excellent presentation as well as oral and written communications skills, problem solving abilities and great interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to create and nurture effective working relationships with the project’s stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of and active use of MS Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Self-driven, has initiative and can work well with minimal supervision as well as part of a diverse team.
  • Ability to understand the local dialects in Kwale/Kilifi County is an added advantage.
