Prof. Calestous Juma

Prof. Calestous Juma - Executive Director Emiritus


Dr. Calestous Juma founded the African Centre for Technology Studies (ACTS) and served as its Exectuve Director until 1995 when he was appointed Executive Secretary of the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity, Montreal. He is Professor of the Practice of International Development at Harvard Kennedy School (HKS). He is Director of Science, Technology, and Globalization at HKS's Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs. He serves as Faculty Chair of the “Innovation for Economic Development” and “Technology, Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Africa” executive programs. Juma also directs the Center's Agricultural Innovation Policy in Africa Project and Health Innovation Policy in Africa projects funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.  He co-chairs the High-Level African Panel on Emerging Technologies (APET) of the African Union and is on the jury member of the Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering as well as the Africa Food Prize. He has been elected to several scientific academies including the Royal Society of London, the US National Academy of Sciences, the World Academy of Sciences, the UK Royal Academy of Engineering and the African Academy of Sciences. Juma has won several international awards and received honorary degrees for his work on science, technology and innovation for sustainable development. He holds a doctorate in science and technology policy studies and has written widely on science, technology, and environment. He is author of The New Harvest: Agricultural Innovation in Africa (Oxford University Press, 2011, 2015). His latest book, Innovation and Its Enemies: Why People Resist New Technologies, published by Oxford University Press in 2016, received the 2017 Breakthrough Paradigm Award. Twitter @Calestous
