Prof. Judi W. Wakhungu - Executive Director Emiriti
Prof. Wakhungu is the Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Water and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kenya since June 2013 to-date. Prior to her appointment as Cabinet Secretary, Prof. Wakhungu was the Executive Director of the African Centre for Technology Studies (ACTS) in Nairobi, Kenya from 2002 to 2013. ACTS is a Nairobi-based international inter-governmental (IGO) science, technology, and environmental policy think tank that generates and disseminates new knowledge through policy analysis, capacity building, and outreach.
Prof. Wakhungu’s public policy and research interests include science, technology, and innovation; agriculture and food security; biodiversity and natural resource management; energy and water security; and gender issues in science and technology. She has published widely in these fields.
Prof. Wakhungu serves on several national and international boards. These include the Advisory Board of the Lemelson Foundation; International Advisory Board of the Legatum Centre at Massachusetts Institute of Technology; Chair of the STEPS Centre at University of Sussex; Vice- President of the World Bioenergy Association; the Institute for Security Studies; the GoDown Arts Centre; Commissioner on the Commission on Sustainable Agriculture and Climate Change; co-Chair of the International Assessment of Agricultural Science and Technology for Development; Board of Trustees of Biovision Africa; University of Nairobi Council; UNESCO Board Member; and Founder/Trustee of Development Trust Innovation Africa.
Prof. Wakhungu received a B.S. in geology from St. Lawrence University, New York, a M.S. degree in petroleum geology from Acadia University, Canada, and a PhD in energy resources management from Pennsylvania State University.
